 Sheila's Reflections

“The Difference”

January 2008

Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
Psalms 119:133

On January the first were you excited about the “New Year” and all it symbolizes… a clean slate, a fresh start, a second chance, and a new beginning? Did you start the morning off with high expectations of what you desired to accomplish in the next twelve months? I wonder, did you like myself, enthusiastically put pen to paper jotting down your goals or resolutions? Maybe, next you promised God and yourself that this year will be different from the last one. This year you are determined to make wise choices, to read through the “Bible”, to be less critical, to have a daily quite time, to be punctual, to lose those extra pounds, to reach out in compassion, to let order and peace reign in your home, to be an encourager, and even seek God’s will for your life. These are all noble and excellent goals to have made. The question we all should ask ourselves is, “What steps do we need to take for this year to end differently?”

It has been said, that a journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step. Making that first step in the right direction is easy. What is so vitally important is the direction of the steps that follow. Therein lies the challenge! Why? Because from day one the enemy –Satan- will be waiting with anticipation at every cross road and rest stop of our journey; with speed traps of business, sink holes of adversity, blind spots of doubt, roadblocks  of confusion, and sand traps of hopelessness to discourage us from staying on course. Only by following different directions, changing lanes, and traveling on a new path not littered with old attitudes and thought processes can we expect the next twelve months to be any different from the last.

The difference comes when we are willing to exchange our old path for the scriptural path found in God’s word. In Psalms 119:105 the scripture says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” A lamp is only used in the darkness for taking one step at a time. It is not a flashlight, floodlight or high beam headlight for seeing down the road or path. This truth contains the secret! God intends for us to focus on our next step not on our next mile… one step at a time! This is what will have made the difference when December the thirty first of two thousand eight rolls around.

God bless you until our next visit,

                                                                             Sheila
