“The Greatest Gift”

December 2009

Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. – II Corinthians 9:15

It was the winter of my fifth year and Christmas was quickly approaching. As was the tradition in our small town no Christmas celebrations were started or any decorations put up until the day after Thanksgiving.

Just like it was yesterday, I can still remember holding my mother’s hand as we walked through town, on the busy sidewalk, peering into the store front windows. They were all decked out with Christmas scenes and Christmas carols could be heard every time a store door was opened.

Even bundled up in a coat, toboggan, and mittens, it was so cold you could see your breath as you exhaled. But that didn’t matter to me because we were going into “Quillans Store” and they had toys in the back. My heart raced so fast as we approached the shelf where the dolls were on display. It didn’t take long for me to fall for a blue eyed, brown haired beauty. Now that doll didn’t do anything special like talking, crying, wetting its diaper, or walking…but to me it was the greatest gift any little girl could ever receive. Right then and there my heart longed for that doll to be mine come Christmas morning.

Not until four years later, at the age of nine, was I given the greatest gift that anyone could receive…and it wasn’t the doll my parents gave me that Christmas morning back in “1962”! It was the precious gift of Jesus coming to live in my heart. So, as we celebrate this Christmas season may each of us take the time to share Jesus with someone. For “He” alone is the greatest gift any of us will ever receive.

God bless you until our next visit,
Christmas blessings on you and yours,
