The True Spirit of Christmas

December 2008

Colossians 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth

It’s so easy to get caught up in the “I Want That” materialism of modern day Christmas, and so easy to get lost in the many distractions of an often hectic schedule. On and on we go focusing our minds and energies on all the things we and society believe must be accomplished in order to have a successful Christmas. By the time the twenty-fifth of December arrives our whole perspective of Christmas has been distorted and we find ourselves tired, overwhelmed, and frazzled because yet again we get our focus off the “True Spirit of Christmas”.

Now on the other hand, you may be struggling like so many to even find a reason for celebrating this season because of what is going on in your life. Maybe you’ve lost your job due to company downsizing or closing its doors altogether. Could be that in the midst of the Christmas rush your heart is heavy and grief stricken over the recent loss of a loved one and frankly you see no reason to celebrate.

The answer to all our needs, during this holy season, is for us to fix our eyes on and participate in a different kind of Christmas…one that embraces, shares, celebrates, finds joy from, receives hope from, trusts in, takes refuge in, and completely gets caught up in the “True Spirit of Christmas”…Jesus Christ – Emanuel-God with us – Wonderful Counselor – Blessed Redeemer – Saviour – Soon coming King! So my heartfelt prayer is that each of us will take the focus off our wants, losses, and even our needs and set our affection on what really matters…Jesus! For “He” alone is the “True Spirit of Christmas” and the only reason for celebrating!

God bless you until our next visit,

                                                                             Sheila
